This week, DBI Dishes on Bundle of Joy Maternity & Baby Boutique with Laura Burns.
Q: So tell me a bit about yourself!
Laura: Well I graduated from SDSU last May with a major in apparel merchandising and marketing and business minors. Before I started the store, I thought that Brookings had a need to be filled. I felt there was something missing for momma so I decided to take a leap of faith and just did it!
Q: When did Bundle of Joy officially open?
Laura: It opened last year on September 2nd!
Q: The name Bundle of Joy, how did you come up with that?
Laura: It’s funny because my husband wanted to name it “Bun in the Oven” but I decided against that. It kind of was one of those where I was laying there in the middle of the night just thinking of momma and baby, and it came to me. Bundle of Joy! Anyone who has a baby, it’s their bundle of joy.
Q: Did you always know you wanted to have your own business?
Laura: I always knew I wanted to own my own business. I just didn’t know that it was going to happen this fast. I graduated, got married and started my business!
Q: What else besides fulfilling the need lead you to opening this business?
Laura: Well in my apparel merchandising classes we had to make up a business and I always did a maternity store. When it actually got serious and I decided I was actually going to do this, I started asking around on what people wanted! Yes, you can go to Walmart or wherever else, but the clothing I carry is quality clothing and unique. I am also very proud that I carry a line of clothing that Kate Middleton’s son was wearing recently!
Q: What can people expect when they come in and what are some of the favorite items?
Laura: I have everything from teething toys, cloth diapers, maternity clothing, baby clothing, stomach shapers, cute sets for pictures and cups. I have a little bit of everything! The popular products are our Sophie the Giraffe teething toy and amber teething necklaces. People like our swimwear because we have reusable swim diapers. You can use them all summer. We have these cups that they can stick to walls or the fridge and they are great in the bathtub with the kids. We also have gift registry available. You can find Rebecca Scott bags here as well.
Q: What is your next goal you’re working towards for Bundle of Joy?
Laura: Bundle of Joy Photography is the next thing I’m working on. I love taking pictures of the little ones that come in here. I would love to start up photography with this business that would include birthing, infants, maternity and whatever else the mom’s would be looking for. I really like the silhouette pictures especially with before and after birth ones. I’m also looking to add Honest Co. products to the store sometime soon!
